This is always cause for trouble when starting something new.
Well I want to make a game, how do I go about doing that, everything starts with an idea, and well an idea to make a game is not really enough, so how do u get started. This differs a lot from person to person, but what I did was, I sat down with a pen a block of paper and a large Guinness, and i started drawing, I can’t really draw at all but it still helps me when I have to be creative or solve problems, and thereby generate idea´s.
After a few sips and a rather nonsensical drawing I started with my initial thoughts on what kind of game I wanted to make so I wrote down a few keywords, already my mind was pretty much shooting in all directions going in quite deep to some core aspects, but for purposes of this blog I will keep it a bit more organized.
Here are some of the keywords from my initial thoughts
Strategy
Simple
Card game
Resource / Score based
If I boil this down: I want a simple strategy card game which is based of resources and score.
I think this is a good place to start, my major concern as for right now is some of those core mechanics and how to make them simple, both the word strategy and resource does not always go well with simple, I think that will be one of the major challenges, but it will all come down to each of the elements/mechanics an whether I manage to keep those parts simple.
I had a lot more thoughts on this first evening of starting my adventure of crafting my own game and I will, in the coming days / weeks, go over each of the 3 (Strategy, Card Game and Resource / Score) elements including my initial thoughts on how I want them to work.
For now take care.
